Bobcat Bulletin, v.26

February 23, 2024

We had a blast this week here in Moretown!  This week each student found moments of joy, kindness and community.

Monday morning our fourth graders persevered through NAEP testing and represented our school well.  While we don't get individual results on this test, these students made MES proud with how focused they were and how respectful they were to our guests.

Tuesday brought Winter Fun Day and it truly was fun!  Our staff members used the morning time to open their spaces up for a variety of activities including pretzel making, button making, tissue flower making, yoga, play dough, kinetic sand, games, karaoke, dance parties and more.  Kids were able to pick and choose where they wanted to spend time and enjoyed visiting some old classrooms or some that they haven't yet gotten to.  Many even enjoyed going back to preschool/kindergarten and revisiting some favorite old toys!

Wednesday was our trip to the Flynn Theater to see the Dance Theatre of Harlam.  Our students got a taste of what a professional life is like as a dancer and learned about the significance of Hazel Scott and her contributions to the world of dance and music despite the color of her skin.  Students also were wowed by a choreographed ballet featuring hip hop music from James Brown and Aretha Franklin.

On Thursday nine of our fifth and sixth grade musicians traveled to Harwood for the morning to participate in the HUUSD District Choral Festival.  They spent the morning rehearsing with students across our district to polish their evening performance.  I was so proud to see these students represent Moretown so well at the performance.  Additionally, I want to send a special 'thank you' to Carolyn Adams who spoke eloquently during her portion of the evening performance and engaged students with an exciting rendition of 'The Bat' by Andy Beck.

Thursday was also a special day as our students and staff got to thank School Board Chair and Moretown Representative, Kristen Rodgers.  Kristen has been a voice for Moretown on the board for the past 5 years and has been the chair for the past two.  She has continually put Moretown needs at the core of her decision-making and is now stepping down to allow for fresh new ideas and to spend some time with her family.  A book will be placed in our library in honor of Kristen and Liz Harris painted her a special heart to thank her for her service.

Today the excitement continued with classroom celebrations, snacks and so many pajamas!  We definitely welcomed break with style.

While we know that some will be traveling this vacation, we hope that you will all join us in the MES gym for Town Meeting on Tuesday, March 5th.  Our Girl Scout Troop will be selling cookies, the Historical Society will be offering breakfast and the Fire Department will be offering lunch.  In addition, I hope you'll consider joining me in the Harwood Auditorium at 6pm on Monday, March 4th for the HUUSD Annual Meeting.

We are all sending our students and families wishes for a vacation filled with togetherness, Vitamin D and a bit of extra fun.  As always, we look forward to welcoming our students back on Wednesday, Marh 6th.

March 6th Nordic Skiing

We didn't have a chance to cross-country ski in P.E. class this week, and so we are hoping for some excellent snow conditions when we return from break on Wednesday, March 6th. (Wear your pjs inside out, flush an ice cube down the toilet, do your favorite snow-manifesting routine!) Snow and weather permitting, we'll be skiing during health class and students should come dressed to be outside and are welcome to bring their own cross-country skis if they have them. About twenty students opted to cross-country ski during our Winter Fun Day this week and had a blast!

From Mrs. Willard

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Harwood Union School District is committed to bringing unique learning opportunities to our students. The school has curated a collection of digital eBooks and audiobooks for our students in Sora, the Student Reading App. The school community can discover new titles in Sora throughout the year, including school vacations!

Why Sora?
The collection of titles in Sora is an extension of our physical school library, only it is an app with 24/7 access to ebooks and audiobooks. It is convenient for students to check out titles at home, on the weekends or during school breaks with no worry about misplacing a book or running up late fees – these digital titles automatically return at the end of the lending period!

Sora can help students of all ages read more and improve comprehension. Struggling or reluctant readers, learning-challenged, second language learners, and gifted readers can all benefit from this service.

  • Enrich vocabulary and improve comprehension and pronunciation

  • Introduce students to books above their reading level

  • Teach critical listening

  • Help busy kids find time to read

  • Incentivize reading with fun avatars and achievements

  • Allow easy access to public library’s collection, too! (In the Sora menu select: +Add a library)

How can my student access Sora?

  1. Download the free Sora app from the Apple App story, Google Play Store, or visit: https://soraapp.com/library/vssdcvt

  2. Login with school Classlink credentials

  3. Enjoy anytime, anywhere on a computer, tablet, or smartphone.

Whether a student’s interest lies in classics for required reading, or the latest popular juvenile or young adult fiction, they can find it all in Sora!

Where can I find more information?

Sincerely,

Nancy Willard

Forestry Management

The Forestry Management Committee has completed the update to The Town Forestry Management Plan. The draft document is ready for community input. The committee is looking to, send to the Select Board, post on the Town website, send to abutters, and post with link on FPF with all including reference to a public meeting for comments and review. The committee would like to suggest and request that the review take place at the  Select Board meeting Monday April 1st. This would be included in the draft release.  The FMC is aware of the land records review, this however should not be a reason to hold off on the community review aspect of the plan update.
